Why is New Year's Day special?

Have you ever wondered why our society places so much importance on New Year's Day and our resolutions? What's so different between waking up on New Year's Day as opposed to your birthday or Labor Day or even Martin Luther King Day? What exactly is so special about New Year's Eve?
You want to know what I think is so special? Hope. The hope that our resolutions and aspirations will come true. Relief. The relief one feels by putting certain achievements and actions on a future to-do list rather than today's. Cleanliness. The clean feeling we get from the old year being wiped away with all of the bad memories you may have had and leaving behind only a fresh start with the possibility of great memories.

I think that all of these emotions are valid and can inspire action that was desired but not taken in the old year, which is fabulous! However, I also believe that we should act as if every day is New Year's Day. Why have this fresh start and hope for certain accomplishments only on one day of the year? We should wake up every single day, open the bedroom windows, and sing out, "Carpe diem!" ("seize the day")! If we were all to take this approach where every day is a fresh start full of possibility and inspiration, just imagine how much more we could accomplish. I don't think we need to wait until the first of the year to start a new workout regime or (in my case) finally start the blog we have been telling our friends about for a year (whoops!). Every day could be a day full of marvelous accomplishment. So, let's vow to start living this way in 2017 and turn our sometimes stagnant lives into ones brimming with achievement and joy!
