The Importance of Human Connection

The other evening, I had the most magical experience, one filled with spontaneous but incredibly genuine human connection that ignited my soul. I was sitting at a restaurant with one of my good friends chowing down on some dinner when we decided to pull out this deck of "deep question" cards I have. We already know each other so well that we could practically answer word for word exactly what the other person would say, but as we were playing, this stranger sitting at a table near us decided to chime in. He looked at us quizzically and asked what game we were playing. We explained that it's a deck of cards with a bunch of deep and/or philosophical questions on them; it's a great way to stimulate incredible conversation! As we said this, a huge smile formed across his eager face, and he asked us both what our answers would be to the question we had previously asked one another. Within minutes, my friend, the stranger, the stranger's friend, and I were soul-deep in conversation about our biggest regrets, what we would do if our fears did not exist, and what our purposes are in this spectacular life.

One of the strangers was an exceptionally kind, inquisitive Indian man, and the other was a wonderfully curious and very attentive French man. These were two people that my friend and I never would have had the honor of meeting if it had not been for 2 things: 1) my friend and I having a truly meaningful, intriguing conversation and 2) the courage of that French man to strike up a conversation with strangers.

We so often go through life in our little bubbles, only speaking with the friend in front of us at the restaurant, distracting ourselves on our phones while in line at Starbucks, using our headphones on every plane ride, etc...What happened to genuine human connection? What happened to those magical moments of speaking with a stranger and feeling such an exceptional spark just from meeting a new human being? Humans are social creatures, but in the past few decades, we have started to act instead like technological creatures. There is definitely a time and place for technology, but my night of spontaneous and genuine human connection reminded me just how special this connection is. So, here's to less social media scrolling and more talking with strangers you meet in line. Everyone on this planet has such a unique story and so much knowledge that you might not have. Get out of your bubble, and talk to someone new. Hear a cool story, learn something intriguing, laugh at their jokes, and get lost in a meaningful discussion about literally anything. It just might ignite your soul too.
